Walton Residence has the best Gold Coast Chicago apartments for a luxurious extended stay, but there’s more to Gold Coast’s history than you think. See what you need to know about this fantastic Chicago neighborhood.
Gold Coast Chicago History
The Gold Coast area was founded in 1882 by millionaire Potter Palmer. Eleven years after the Great Chicago Fire, Palmer reconstructed much of State Street and filled in the swamp area where Lake Shore Drive now stands. He also built a home for himself, known as the Palmer Mansion. At the time, the Palmer Mansion was the most luxurious private residence in Chicago.
Soon after, other members of Chicago’s elite also moved into the area. This made the Gold Coast Chicago’s richest neighborhood, hence its name. Decades after Palmer’s death, the Mansion was demolished to make way for more Gold Coast Chicago apartments in 1950. In 2014, Gold Coast was named the #6 richest neighborhood in America.
All Gold Coast Chicago apartments are located near the Magnificent Mile. This is a mile long stretch of high-end stores and boutiques along Michigan Avenue. Louis Vuitton, Banana Republic, and the Water Tower Place are key attractions to visitors and residents.
