Your Guide to The Best Places to Go Biking in Chicago

Chicago is a cyclist’s dream thanks to its extremely bike-friendly streets and urban trails. When you’re looking for where to go biking in Chicago, it can be difficult to choose your path with so many great options. We’ve done the leg work for you and created this guide to help you plan your next Windy City bike outing. These are five of our favorite local spots to put your pedal to the metal.

Lakefront Trail

One of the most well-known trails for biking in Chicago, the 18.5-mile Lakefront Trail runs along the eastern tip of the city and provides clear views of Lake Michigan on one side and the Chicago skyline on the other. You’ll encounter a little bit of everything along the way, from wetlands to bird sanctuaries, museums, harbors, and beaches. The trail has wide, clearly-marked lanes for bikers, walkers, and runners, making it one of the safest and easiest trails for taking in the great urban outdoors.

The 606

What was once an abandoned rail line is now one of the top places to go biking in Chicago. The 606’s 2.7 miles of multi-use recreational trail and park connects several of Chicago’s neighborhoods including Wicker Park and Bucktown and offers numerous attractions including an observatory, art installations, and green space. The 606 is the quickest way to traverse the city from east to west, and history buffs will appreciate the signs along the trail that tell the story of the former railroad track that was built in the 1800s.

Chicago Riverwalk

The famous Chicago RiverWalk has much to offer tourists and locals alike, from fishing and river tours to great restaurants and lively bars. Go for a casual ride on the 1.25-mile bike path that runs along the Main Branch of the Chicago River and admire the river views and city skyline. There’s no better way to immerse yourself in the Windy City’s vibe than pedaling your way under bridges and through the heart of all the action.

North Shore Channel Trail

Get in a great workout while biking in Chicago on North Shore Channel Trail. The 13-mile trail starts in Lincoln Square and ends in northern Evanston. It winds along both sides of the North Shore Channel and the northern tip of the Chicago River, which makes for some fantastic views of mixed terrain. Keep an eye out for deer, raccoons, birds of prey, and other wildlife, and stop at the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park for a fun photo opp.
