We all love our pets and living with them can be a dream. But sometimes they can make a mess or leave behind bad odors. While some of us get used to the smell and conditions of living with a pet, it is not always the case for your guests or landlords who drop by for impromptu visits. To avoid any battles with your landlord, it’s important to always keep your apartment rental as neat as possible. Here are six helpful ways to keep your pet friendly apartment clean.
One of the most important things to remember when renting a pet friendly apartment is to have removable covers for your furniture. Accidents happen and your pets shouldn’t be blamed for wanting to cuddle up next to you while watching TV. Try covering your couch with a stylish blanket or make sure your cushions can be removed by a zipper and thrown in the wash. Some cushions can’t be removed or washed for fear of staining the material, but don’t worry. We have solutions for those too.
Pet Odor Removers
There are many sprays out in the market made specifically for eliminating pet odors. Lightly mist your couches and carpets to help get rid of odors that have become trapped over time. If you are unsure if your couch cushion or bedspread will or won’t become stained, spray the corner of the fabric or an inconspicuous spot first to test it out.
Odor can get trapped in furniture, especially if it is covered in fur. It’s important to vacuum your apartment periodically to avoid letting odors stick to your couch and cushions. Use your vacuum’s brush attachments to comb through your furniture and loosen up stray hairs. Don’t forget to also clean your dog or cat’s bed if they are too big to throw in the wash.
Sometimes smells are so strong and no amount of pet odor neutralizers can help. When all else fails, try baking soda. Baking soda is a powerful agent for absorbing bad smells, which is why people often store it in refrigerators. Sprinkle baking soda on any couch cushion or carpet and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Then, use your vacuum to clean it up and you should be left with fresher smelling furniture. For really powerful smells, you may need to use the baking soda treatment twice or more to eliminate the odor.
One of the most wonderful things about pet friendly apartments is that you have the option of getting that puppy you always wanted. Understandably, puppies need time before they learn to use the bathroom outdoors, so having pet mats and training them to do their business on them is a great alternative until they grow.
Clear Your Litter Box
Cats are great to keep in pet friendly apartments in the regard that they don’t require daily walks and bury their own waste in litter boxes. This is especially nice if you live in a high-rise apartment and do not feel like getting up at the crack of dawn to walk a dog to the nearest park. Even so, litter boxes can cause bad odors and it’s important to clean them out. The Humane Society suggests clearing them out at least twice a week depending on your circumstances.
A good owner is a responsible owner, so be sure to take care of your furry loved ones and keep your pet friendly apartment fresh and clean.
